Have you heard of the term “visual acuity”? Knowing this is extremely important as a simple eye checkup can help you achieve a better quality of life! How? By getting the ideal eyewear in the Philippines.

According to the Philippine Academy of Ophthalmology, visual acuity is the clearness or sharpness of vision and is usually measured through an eye chart that is projected at a distance.  Surely, you have been made aware about the term 20/20 vision. But, did you know that this vision does not necessarily mean a perfect vision?

Is 20/20 a perfect eyesight?

Eye experts say that a person with 20/20 vision has a normal vision–he/she can see what an average individual can see on the chart at 20 feet away.

But, if you have a vision of 20/30, it means that you can see letters on the chart at 20 feet that the average person can see from 30 feet. This is the result of an eye test that you DO NOT want to get.

Meanwhile, a person with a 20/15 vision can see at 20 feet that the average person can only see at 15 feet away. Now that’s a pretty sharp vision!

What the chart?

Just when modern treatments of eye problems have surfaced in the last decades, it is interesting to know that the diagnosis is made possible through a humble chart of letters presented in varying sizes.

Eye chart

A Dutch eye doctor in the name of Hermann Snellen created a standardized eye chart in the 1860s.  The Snellen vision testing chart allowed people during the earlier times to go from any eye care provider to any eyeglass maker but still get the same results.  That’s a pretty good advancement during those times!

From those times until today, the need for good eyesight remains a solid truth especially for the working population.

Practical use: Superhuman eyesight?

Remember that in reading an eye chart, there are a number of guidelines including covering one eye with a distance of 6 metres or 20 feet from the chart.  It is important to know that there are other considerations in taking this test such as age; that’s why it is best to seek the help of an eye doctor in order to ensure that the test is administered properly and that the correct diagnosis is provided.

Aside from an improved quality of day-to-day life, a good vision means differently in other fields such as contact sports.  Legendary baseball player Ted Williams is one of the many major-league athletes reportedly having a visual acuity of 20/10.  This allows athletes to have an edge in the game, but many people take for granted the fact that visual acuity is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to “vision”.  For professional contact sports athletes, vision requires eye teaming (aka binocularity), eye-hand coordination and tracking.

Super athlete or not, you deserve to have the best eyewear in the Philippines.  Depending on your lifestyle, a good pair of eyeglasses or contact lenses are your top choices.
