Game On! The Vision Benefits of Video Games

Not only is gaming such a big industry in itself; it’s also becoming a peripheral field of interest for other disciplines such as health and science enough that there are eyeglasses frames and lenses that are made with gamers in mind! And with more research, it has been found out that some of our negative associations about video games are actually turned around.

According to the finding of researchers from the University of Rochester led by Daphne Bavelier, video games, specifically from the “action” genre, significantly improved contrast sensitivity function.

In itself, contrast sensitivity is our innate ability to detect changes, especially subtle ones, in the stimulus we are looking at or in the surrounding periphery. it’s affects sensing small movement in our immediate environment and also to pick out details in poorly lit areas or areas with too much information like recognizing the shape of a person in the dark or picking finding a coin glinting in a weed patch.

While it is still true that, because of the medium being computer or LED TV screen, blue light may still negatively affect vision, eyeglasses frames and lenses are being optimized to reduce eyestrain and to improve overall gaming experience. As much as over exposure to blue light may cause eyestrain, playing video games still have more benefits than cons.

In Bavelier’s study, it was found out that contrast sensitivity was better with already active players as compared to a non-gaming sample group. They also tested if visual contrast sensitivity improved with casual gaming by taking non-players and making them play the action game Call of Duty 2 (Infinity Ward) for 50 hours in a span of 9 weeks. Great improvement was observed in their contrast sensitivity. In a similar study from McMaster University in Canada, patients with cataract disorder were made to play Medal of Honor (Electronic Arts) for 40 hours over the course of one month; the vision of 5 out of 6 patients showed signs of improvement after the trial period!

Other genres of games also have different cognitive training effect that improve our analytical thinking, hand-eye coordination, creative problems solving skills and more. But alas, too much of a good thing is bad that is why if you are planning on playing videogames for long periods of time, make sure that you get eyeglasses frames with matching blue lens filters that help avert eye strain from exposure to blue light.
